FOREWORD:
Number 5 was the only one I didn't really expect anyone to get. You'll see why in a sec.
1. The answer was B.
Here's a challenge. Use "HCTARCS" convincingly in a sentence. Read A, C, D and E backwards. They all make new words.
2. The answer was E.
Except for "wrath", all the words here contain an "SH" sound. Isn't that mind-blowing?
3. C.
A, B, D and E all have irregular plurals. (Medium > media, Flora > florae, Cactus > cacti, Vacuum > vacua). The plural form of "sinus", however, is pretty regular: "sinuses".
4. B.
The most popular right answer. A, C, D and E come from the Latin root "a-" ("from"). Meanwhile, "abysmal" comes from the Greek root "ab-" ("without").
5. D.
I made a mistake with this one. These words were all extracted from the names of rich and famous comic strip artists. Witness:
-Bill Watterson (note the mistake)
-Gary Larson
-Charles Schulz
-Scott Adams
So I guess if you could get 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 right, you'd still be intelligent.
6. B.
These are all anagrams, except for "SWIRL".

If you managed to discover a more compelling pattern in any of the above sets (except for no. 5), you may still be able to redeem yourself by letting the public know.
MEANWHILE, HERE IS WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MY LIFE:
With any luck, my visa will come tomorrow! Here's to hoping...
Speaking of Czech visas, I leave the state in a mere 6 days, and I still have so much to do! I need to do about a month's worth of laundry. I still haven't picked up my last two paychecks from Safeway. (I need to do that today.) My room is a mess and I haven't packed. Oh! And I need an adapter, so I can plug my computer into an outlet when I get to Prague. (Note to self: buy one.)
It's hard to believe that summer's almost over and in less than two weeks, I'm going to leave the country. Time must be nonexistent.
August 24 2005, 18:24:29 UTC 6 years ago
anyway, we should hang out before you leave. thursday? maybe next week?
August 25 2005, 03:58:27 UTC 6 years ago
anyway, hanging out sounds like a peach. i'm free most of the time until i leave on the 30th.
August 25 2005, 03:27:24 UTC 6 years ago
I looked at phonetics a lot, I guess, and that's from where my "vacuum" answerc comes. The others have a sound like "u" in "dustin" at the end.
Do you know which sort of adapter we need? Is it a two-cylindrical-prong one like in Italy?
August 25 2005, 04:08:40 UTC 6 years ago
i don't know! i need to talk to my dad.
re: u's.
ha! you took the bait! i made "u" the second to last letter in four of the five - which should have pointed to "flora" - to lure regular geniuses like you away from the more compelling (and therefore correct) pattern.
(but if you were looking at phonetics, i'm sorry to say that neither "cactus" or "sinus" contain an "uh" sound when i say them. it's more of a "cactiss, siniss" thing. also, i vowel sounds very with dialect, so that wouldn't be a very compelling pattern)
re: truth
and i'm convinced that "tr" is generally not pronounced like a "tr". compare "tree", "truth", and "trout" with "matt rogan" and "pet rooster".
August 25 2005, 14:55:47 UTC 6 years ago
My answer wasn't "flora", silly! and yes, I believe that "sinus" and "cactus" have a "u" sound much like the "a" in "flora". At least, we Minnesoahtans pronounce it as such. So there.
re. truth:
You bring up something interesting with your "tshr" idea. I thought about your statement that "truth" has a "sh" sound last night, and came up with a similar explanation. I think you are right that it sounds like that, but I also think that it's necessary. Perhaps "r" contains some sort of inherent "sh" sound that shows up when it's paired with "t"? I don't know, but if we were to say "tr" like the "t r" in "pet rooster", the "tr" would sound confusingly like the end of one word and the beginning of another (like "pet rooster", of course).
I hope you don't mind me continuing this vicious debate. Let's pick it up when we are done arguing "memory key" v. "jump drive". :)
August 25 2005, 17:43:07 UTC 6 years ago
and i want to hear your "uhhh".
re: tr's
you're right. "pet rooster" and "matt rogan" were not excellent examples. i just wanted to get you thinking open-mindedly about the sounds - as opposed to the spellings - of the words. but it's funny that even here, people don't pronounce "tr" like "tr". there's a gutteral stop thrown in at the end of "pet" and "matt" (respectively, of course)... the "t" isn't pronounced!
but try saying "tuh + ree", making the vowels as short as possible. it's certainly possible.
curious. curious, indeed.

Hopefully you got your visa today and the trip ends up enjoyable and safe.
August 25 2005, 23:13:42 UTC 6 years ago
And the visa came - thank goodness. Now I can relax and think about doing the laundry.
August 26 2005, 02:23:47 UTC 6 years ago
Glad the visa came ^_^! Relaxing is definitely good, doing laundry... depends. lol
